Why has Amsterdam become Europe's Silicon Valley

By Mark Crorkin |

It’s been named 'The Best European Tech City To Work In’ and dubbed as the Silicon Valley of Europe. With a bustling tech scene, start-up hubs, impressive salary and work-life balance, it’s easy to see why Amsterdam is becoming THE place to work in tech. Let’s drill down to the details.

Growing national and international tech scene

There are some big names setting up shop in Amsterdam, with over 170 international tech companies, such as Google, Uber and Cisco, calling it home. As well as big names, start-ups are nurtured and given space and support to grow, meaning the scene is growing fast. Local universities and schools are working to strengthen their own pools of tech talent, collaborating with companies from the get-go to develop public and private sector initiatives and to instil a passion for tech in young people.

Tech talent shortage

Despite this incredible growth, there is a shortage of qualified tech professionals in the Netherlands. Reports from the Amsterdam Economic Board show that demand for junior tech talent in Amsterdam doubled in 2017, with an average of 26 job vacancies available per junior tech worker in the city. With huge growth in the last two years alone, this means there are jobs available for passionate people and companies want talented professionals to fill them. Software developers and data scientists are two in-demand roles which are affected by the tech talent shortage.

Work-life balance

The Netherlands was ranked number one in the world by the OECD for its work-life balance. But what makes it such an incredible place in which to live and work? Language accessibility makes it easy for international companies and their staff to slot in. Public transport and cycling infrastructure are excellent and commuting times to and from work are lower than in other countries. People don’t work long hours and make the most of their time off and compared to tech hubs around the world, it has a much lower cost of living. Couple all of this with the incredible experience the city of Amsterdam provides, and you have a complete work-life package.
