If there is one thing that is certain in life, it's the fact that most of us have to deal with uncertainty and change at some point or another.

Uncertainty is never generally regarded in a positive light, as it conjures up feelings of fear, doubt, worry and stress. Yet, in working environments, managers and employees are faced with uncertainty on a frequent basis, whether that might be from a change in policy, career or working practices, relocation or restructuring.

Whatever kind of uncertainty arises in the workplace, it's crucial to know how to handle it effectively. Even if everything seems to be ticking along nicely, nobody really knows what might be around the corner, so preparing for change and the unpredictability it brings is key. Here are some top tips to deal with uncertainty in the workplace.

One of the best ways to tackle uncertainty is to try to accept that it's a normal part of life. However much you try, there are certain things that you just can't control or change, so trying to alter your attitude to uncertainty can help to reduce the levels of stress and fear that it may bring. It's also important to recognise that uncertainty and change aren't always permanent, and the things that you're worried about might not even happen or be as problematic as you'd initially thought they'd be.

Focus on what you can control

Fear and stress of uncertainty often stem from the loss of control of a situation. Therefore, to cope better with uncertainty, try to focus on the things that you can control. For instance, if potential issues could arise with your workforce, consult with an expert recruitment company that may be able to supply a contingent workforce if required. If you're not sure you have sufficient equipment or resources to cope with daily working demands, focus on upgrading your technology so that you can confidently face any situations that might crop up going forward.

While uncertainty may be regarded as a negative thing that could disrupt the functioning of a business, it's worth knowing that, in some cases, it can actually be a positive thing. Uncertainty can make workforces reassess their ways of doing things. It can shake up a business that might be stuck in a rut and it can help it reinvent itself to be better, more productive and efficient.
