The IT Job market in the Netherlands

The job market in the Netherlands is becoming increasingly strong. The economy is consistently improving and growing, attracting an influx of skilled workers and intellectuals - this enables the job market to grow, particularly in the IT sector.

The growth of cities and the development of technology in the Netherlands has led to an increase in the IT sector, such as media, logistics, finance and marketing. This rise of marketing corporations has seen substantial growth in the Netherlands, with Holland becoming one of the broadcasting capitals of Europe. Belgium's economic and technological development has encouraged many prominent technology companies and corporations to base themselves there, such as Restore, Collibra and Sync Solutions.

The Netherlands also has a developed telecommunications infrastructure, as most of the cable infrastructure is developed from the previously state-owned telecommunications system and postal service. This provided the basis for the creation of advanced infrastructure and extensive job opportunities.

Employers often recruit from within the EU or EER, as many graduates who have a good understanding of the English language and substantial work experience are seeking employment in the IT recruitment hotbed. However, most graduates are recruited to jobs which merely offer one-year contracts, with the potential for an extended permanent contract. As the sector is one of the largest and fastest growing in the country, the potential gain from seeking employment in this sector is substantial.

The Netherlands has the world's eighth-highest employment rate at 74.8%, with a 4.8% unemployment rate in July 2017. More than half the population work part-time due to the low cost of living and low inflation rates. This economic and social climate supports the development of the IT sector, as well as seeing the sector grow to be one of the highest-paid in the country.

Contractors often seek graduates or professionals with previous experience and qualifications in the sector. Their new roles involve developing the country's IT sector itself, as well as its technological infrastructure. As technological advances continue, the job opportunities and recruitment drive in IT continue to grow in potential.

After you accept a job in the IT sector in the Netherlands, the employer will offer you a labour contract, or a 'arbeidsovereenkomst' which details the agreement of your employment. This contract can be reviewed and altered if needed, but once signed it is a binding legal contract that puts you in official paid employment, or 'loondienst'.
