Directors View: Telecoms

Here at Vine Resources we’ve travelling a lot in the last few months meeting clients face to face including operators, vendors and consultancies within the Telecoms market.  It’s been interesting hearing about each business and the various challenges encountered by line management, recruitment teams and procurement and the challenges faced in each country.

Recruitment is certainly interesting as the need to find great people continue with skills shortages in a number of areas still prevalent however with continued pressures on recruitment spend. Once the economic cycle picks up again it will be an even bigger challenge to find and retain the best people and the smart companies are investing in the long term development of their existing employees and utilising the best consultants for projects whilst sharing and ensuring that tacit knowledge stays within the business which can often be lost once the consultant moves on.

The rise of the Chinese within Telecoms can be seen as a threat to more established players in the market or an opportunity to raise their game and really look after their customers who we all can’t take for granted.  There is plenty of RFI’s/RFP’s being sent to vendors and consultancies from operators but there’s plenty of talk but not always action with some proposals still under discussion from over 18 months ago.

When I pose the question to companies about what their want from recruitment partners?  Trust, transparency, speed of delivery, quality and value.  These qualities should be the basics rather than the exception however so many recruitment partners let themselves down on more or more of these values.

Of course some of the hot areas we are hearing plenty about over the last few months has included Big Data, Mobile Payments, M2M, VAS, Cloud services, Managed Service, IPv6, Core Network and these are certainly areas that seem set to increase demand for service.  As Q2 is well underway here at Vine Resources we are trying to do the simple things right; listening to our customer’s needs and provide a great solution.
