On my visits to clients and candidates across the UK and Europe over the last month there’s been a common theme I’ve been hearing around austerity in the organisations and disengagement.  Now we know this has been a long and deep recession and at present doesn’t show any signs of improving across the Euro Zone but on the ground at clients you hear things that are really affecting the way companies work with their employees and contractors. 

For example many company’s at present need every headcount signed off at CTO/CEO level even after an approval has been given as a final sign off.  Another example is the staff canteen where discounts were given to both permanent and contractors but now contractors don’t enjoy the same perk.  The office drinks and parties have been reduced or cut completely and use of taxi’s have been forbidden until  certain time of night when public transport is unavailable.

 All in all there is some very unhappy and disengaged people working at companies right across the UK and Europe from which I’ve heard many first hand examples both from candidates and the clients themselves.   When the market picks up there is certainly going to be a lot of movement; it’s now just a question of when.
